SoTex Playwrights Lab

The SoTex Playwrights Lab is a new play development program at The Public Theater. The program was created to develop works by playwrights in our region with the goal of identifying pieces to produce in future seasons, and also to support the development and cultivation of South Texas writers.

The Chismosa Mysteries: A Deadly Venom | May 5 and 7

Lencha is invited to a prestigious museum opening in San Antonio by her scientist primo Gregorio to celebrate his rare rattlesnake discovery. Before the event, a terrible crime is committed. Together with her goddaughter Lila and some mystical help, she uses her “chismosa” ways to solve the crime.

Calling | May 12 and 13

Calling is a play that follows the journey of River, a non-binary Latiné writer, into the hectic world of call center work. This coming-of-age story features spoken word as River translates the corporate world into poetry- meeting friends and robots on the way to their true calling.

Harbinger | May 19 and 21

Multiple women across generations face what it means to be a mother during the apocalypse.
